PITTSBURGH (93/7 The Fan) - The Penguins get another chance to clinch a playoff berth Thursday night against the Detroit Red Wings at PPG Paints Arena and this time they could have two of their top stars back.
Coach Mike Sullivan told reports after the morning stake that both center Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang will be a game time decision.
Letang, who wore a non-contact jersey Wednesday, wore a regular one Thursday morning but suggested it wasn't a significant move."
"I talked to you yesterday, that was an optional morning skate. There were 10 guys out there, it was just another practice. It was low intensity, nothing more," said Letang. "I have to talk to the doctors. I can't base a decision on morning skate."
Forward Jared McCann said, "It's a huge confidence booster and those are guys who are a big part of this team. We are excited to have them back tonight."
Forward Matt Cullen would like nothing more than to see both Malkin and Letang return Thursday.
"Anytime you can get two all-star players back in your lineup, there are obviously huge pieces in what we do. It's that time of year, it's crunch time. And, obviously, this is a big one tonight. If we can get those guys back, it's a huge help."
If the Penguins beat the wings Thursday, they're in the playoffs; they can also lose tonight and get in with if the Capitals beat the Canadiens in regulation Thursday or if the Ranger beat Columbus in regulation Friday.
