The Tennessee Titans' recent coronavirus outbreak has threatened to upend the 2020 NFL season after the first three weeks went off relatively smoothly.
The outbreak affecting well over a dozen Titans players and team personnel prompted the postponement of Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The team reported two additional new positives on Sunday morning, according to media reports, bringing the total to 18 positives and casting serious doubt on their scheduled Week 5 game against the Buffalo Bills.
The Titans-Bills game set for Oct. 11 was "no sure thing," according to NBC Sports reporter Peter King.
The league and the players association were investigating the outbreak and its causes, reports over the weekend said.
One league source compared the Titans' situation to that of one of MLB's worst coronavirus outbreaks.
“It’s the Marlins all over,” the source said, according to King.
More than 20 Miami personnel, most of them players, tested positive for the virus in late July, prompting the suspension of the team's season for over a week.
An MLB investigation found that the Marlins players were cavalier about following coronavirus protocols, according to Scott Miller of Bleacher Report.
The Marlins, for what it's worth, went on to finish in second place in the NL East and reached the postseason after returning from the coronavirus hiatus. They were set to begin their NL Division Series against the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday.
