PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) After a very productive 2021-22 season behind the bench, Todd Reirden was given a promotion by the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It was announced that the Penguins promoted Reirden to associate coach along with a two-year contract extension.

"Todd plays an important role on our coaching staff," general manager Ron Hextall said. "He's had a proven impact on the defensemen and contributes to the coaching staff as a whole with his wealth of knowledge from over a decade as an NHL coach. We are excited to extend his contract."

Since joining the Penguins for the second time in his coaching career, Reirden has been the main voice behind the power play and defensive core.

Reirden's work with Penguins' defensemen has been outstanding, playing a role in coaching Kris Letang to his best NHL season at the age of 35.

"As a coaching staff we value Todd's knowledge, experience and passion for the game," said head coach Mike Sullivan.
"He challenges us, as coaches, to be better every day and his relationships with the players are invaluable. He is deserving of this promotion and we are excited for him."

At 51-years-old, Reirden has time to again become a head coach somewhere in the NHL.
