PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – A rare one-game rehab assignment for a position player as Jared Triolo returns after one day in AAA and is back in the starting lineup.
"I'm not sure what the plan was, but I felt really good in the game yesterday,” Triolo said. “Happy to be back here."
“It was gonna be how he reacted,” said Pirates manager Derek Shelton. “We wanted to send him down, he had to run the bases. There were some things that he hadn't done yet. The fact that it was such a short time down, that it was just 10 days, we were pretty confident once he went through the workout yesterday and talking with Truby with how he felt and we thought alright we can get him back.”
Triolo homered in his first at bat for Indianapolis on Tuesday night.
"It gave me a lot of confidence, obviously,” Triolo said. “I hadn't hit a ball in a week or seen live pitching in a week. It gave me a lot of confidence."
Shelton said Triolo adds ‘tremendous versatility’ and to show that he won’t go to first base, rather play second on Wednesday night against Washington. Shelton said he prefers to have stronger defense up the middle, which is why not first base.
The 27-year-old had one hit in 17 at bats through six games before a lower back issue shut him down. Last year Triolo hit .216 with 10 doubles and nine home runs.
Infielder Tsung-Che Cheng has been optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis as the corresponding roster move.
