AAA infielder recalled, Oviedo moves up to AA

Stats for Liover Peguero & what Don Kelly said about his potential impact

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He could be used anywhere in the infield and potentially in the outfield, 24-year-old Liover Peguero recalled by the Pirates before the start of the White Sox series Friday.

The right-handed hitter was batting .251 with 14 doubles, five home runs, 36 RBI in 72 games in AAA this year. It’s his second time up with the Pirates, he had two hits in nine at bats over four games in May.

“All the reports coming back on Peggy have been phenomenal coming back from AAA,” said Pirates manager Don Kelly. “The work that he’s put in and added some versatility too playing first and third and some outfield. Provided some consistent at bats and the leadership he showed at AAA has been tremendous.”

Acquired from Arizona in the Starling Marte trade, Peguero has made 28 starts at short, 20 at third base, nine at second, eight starts in center and five starts at first base this season. In 2023, he played in 59 games with the Pirates hitting .237 with four doubles, seven home runs and 26 RBI.

“I’m excited for Peguero to come back up and be Peggy,” Kelly said. “He’s electric. He’s exciting. He brings energy. Going up and having good at bats and allowing that to happen.”

Another Oviedo step

Rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, then a lat strain, right-handed starter Johan Oviedo will move up from A Bradenton to AA Altoona and start Friday night. He made a pair of starts with the Marauders and was in Pittsburgh on Thursday for the MLB workout.

“He’s in great shape, a good frame of mind,” Kelly said. “We are excited for him to take that next step. You talk about a long journey for him going from Tommy John and looking good in spring and then ended up having the lat. He’s not easy to go through those significant injuries like that back-to-back. Excited for him to take that next step to getting back here."

Oviedo last started in the majors on September 27, 2023.
