According to a report, Pirates infielder Rodolfo Castro will be fined a game for having a cell phone in his pocket during a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks last week.
ESPN's Jeff Passan says Castro violated MLB Policy.
Castro's smartphone slid out of his pocket while sliding into third base.
Castro is appealing the suspension. He said after the game it was an accident.
"I don't think there's any professional ballplayer that would ever go out there with any intentions of taking a cell phone," Castro said. "It's horrible it happened to me. Obviously, it was very unintentional."
As Passan points out, cell phones can be used to cheat.
MLB rules state that a player cannot use a phone thirty minutes before a game and during the game.
If MLB believed Castro was using the phone to cheat, he would've likely faced a more significant punishment.
While the appeal is ongoing, Castro will be able to play. The Pirates begin a nine-game homestand on Tuesday night. They begin it with a three-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
Castro is batting .239 for the Pirates this season over 92 at bats. He has two home runs and five RBI.
