PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – He shares the record for a Pirates left-hander with 78 appearances in 2002, pitcher Scott Sauerbeck died at age 53.
Drafted by the Mets out of Miami, Ohio in 1994, Sauerbeck was a Pirates Rule 5 selection in December of 1998 and made his debut with the Pirates at Three Rivers Stadium on April 5, 1999 striking out three Expos in 2.1 scoreless innings.
The Cincinnati native was impressive as a rookie owning a 2.00 ERA in 67.2 innings. He would pitch 308.2 innings in 341 games over his four and a half years with the Pirates finishing with a 3.56 ERA before he was traded to Boston with Mike Gonzales for Brandon Lyon and Anastacio Martinez.
