PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – There was an early report out about the Pirates signing Andrew McCutchen upon passing a physical. MLB.com's Alex Stumpf says there is not deal, at least not yet.
It seems like both sides want a deal to get done.
"We've said before, I'll say it again, we'd love to find a way for Andrew to finish his career in a Pirates uniform," said Pirates GM Ben Cherington on October 2 after the season ended. "That's as far as we've gone to this point. I haven't had a chance to talk to Andrew since the season ended. I expect I will. I expect we will and we'll get into that. We'll let the season breathe just a little bit and get together with him on that and listen to him and see what makes sense from there."
McCutchen told Dan Zangrilli on the Fan Postgame Reaction show he 'wants to be able to do it again next year'. McCutchen on the final week of the season said he likes this team and thinks this team is capable of special things.
Last season McCutchen hit 20 home runs with 18 doubles in 120 games hitting .232. In 16 MLB seasons (11 with the Pirates) he has 2,152 hits, 429 doubles, 319 home runs, 1095 RBI and a career .367 on-base percentage.
The Pirates currently have three openings on the 40-man roster.
