PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Pirates adding to their bullpen depth according to several reports including Alex Stumpf of mlb.com. Right-hander Justin Lawrence claimed off waivers from the Rockies Monday.

The 30-year-old was 4-4 with a 6.49 ERA in 56 appearances with Colorado last season with 45 strikeouts, 33 walks, seven hit batters and a 1.77 WHIP. The previous year with the Rockies was the complete opposite. The ERA was 3.72 in 69 appearances with 78 strikeouts in 75 innings with 36 walks and a 1.34 WHIP.

Given how tough it is to pitch at Coors Field in Denver, the career splits over four pro seasons are highlighted:
·     Home 98.1 innings, 6.96 ERA, 10 home runs allowed, .320 batting average against, 1.8 WHIP
·     Away 95.2 innings, 3.86 ERA, 7 home runs allowed, .224 batting average against, 1.42 WHIP

Lawrence is 6’3”, 213 pounds, is one of the best in the league at ground ball rates and won’t be a free agent until 2029 although he is arbitration eligible.

To make room on the roster, right-handed starter Johan Oviedo, who had hoped to be ready for the start of the season, goes on the 60-day injured list. Oviedo missed all of last season after Tommy John surgery.
