Pirates Manager Shelton Excited For Roberto Clemente Day

Pirates Manager Derek Shelton was the one behind the movement to have all his players wear the #21 jersey for the game tonight as Major League Baseball celebrates Roberto Clemente Day.

‘Today is a holiday. It’s Roberto Clement Day,” Shelton said in his weekly appearance on the Cook and Joe Show. “How can you not be in the city of Pittsburgh and be excited about what’s going on today. The fact that we are honoring one of the greatest players of all-time.”

Shelton said he is excited for his first Roberto Clement Day as manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He felt strongly about the idea of his players wearing the #21 when he took the job because he feels you should honor not only one of the game’s greatest players but also the greatest humanitarian in the history of the sport.

He felt he could use his voice as the Pirates manager to bring this to the table and now that the day is here and he has the #21 jersey hanging in his locker he is very excited and honored.

Shelton told Cook and Joe that when you walk around Pittsburgh you see the black and gold prominent everywhere but that they also know the #21 and who it belonged to.

He says tonight will be a special night and an emotional one for all involved and the Clemente sons who will not only be honoring their father but their mother Vera Clemente who passed away last November.
