The deal that sent outfielder Austin Meadows and Tyler Glasnow to Tampa Bay Rays for Chris Archer is considered by some to be the worst trade in Pirates history, with Cook & Joe’s Joe Starkey saying it could be a Top 20 worst trade in MLB history.
Now, that trade is looking even worse.
Shane Baz, who was also acquired by the Rays is pitching…really…really well in Triple-A Durham.
Baz, who was also just named to the MLB All-Star Futures Game along with Pirates pitchers Quinn Priester and Roansy Contreras.
This past Sunday, Baz struck out 10 and walked 0 over 5.0 scoreless innings.
This season Baz has an unbelievable 69 strikeouts and only 5 walks over 46.2 innings pitched.
He also has a 2.12 ERA with a 0.77 WHIP.
Those stats are across this three starts with the Durham Bulls and seven games with Double-A Montgomery Biscuits.
The one bright spot for the Pirates, is that trade was made by the last regime, but it’s impact is still being felt today.
Meadows is currently batting .239 with 54 RBI and 16 home runs. Glasnow, who is currently out with a partial UCL tear to his elbow, is 5-2 with a 2.66 ERA.
Archer, who re-signed with the Rays in the offseason, has only appeared in two games and has been out since April with a forearm injury.
He is 0-1 with a 6.23 ERA in 2021.
