Alex Highsmith talks about his injury, return

Why he said he needs to be extra careful

PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers linebacker Alex Highsmith is improving, not back to practice yet, but isn't giving up on playing against the Bengals on Sunday.

"Progressing every day, that's my goal," Highsmith said of playing at Cincinnati. "It is an AFC North battle, I am aiming to try to get back out there. I got to be confident that I can play on it."

Even though he's eager, he said the trick is he must be especially confident about the injury because it's his left ankle, the one he pushes off on. Highsmith said he will know more on Thursday or Friday and is pushing to play against Cincinnati and has improved even since working out on Saturday. He feels he dodged a bullet having it be only a lower ankle sprain, it could have been much worse.

The 27-year-old has been on the field for six games in 2024, the Steelers have won every one of those games. In his career against the Bengals, Highsmith has 4.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, nine quarterback hits, an interception and a forced fumble.

"Do what I can to get back out there and help my team, that's all that matters to me," Highsmith said. "When I'm out there, be the best version of myself. That's why I have to have that confidence that when I'm out there, I give the best version of myself."
