Browns never considered Roethlisberger because of his 'heavy legs'

Browns writer Mary Kay Cabot says Browns had a chance to take #7

Ben Roethlisberger has dominated the Browns his entire career posting a 24-3-1 career record against Cleveland. One of those losses of course came in the Wild Card game last season, so Cleveland does have that.

Overall though, It's been Ben tormenting the Browns and the Dawg Pound and until Baker Mayfield, Roethlisberger was the winningest quarterback at Cleveland's new stadium.

But everything could've been different if the Browns had been the team to draft Roethlisberger and they had a chance with the 6th overall pick in 2004.

It could've been Roethlisberger retiring as a Cleveland Brown, playing his final game at Heinz Field after dominating Pittsburgh for nearly two decades, but of course that isn't the case.

Mary Kay Cabot, who covers the Browns for Cleveland.com tells the Fan Morning Show, says Cleveland passed on Roethlisberger because they believed he had "heavy legs"

Cabot recently talked to former Browns offensive coordinator and interim coach Terry Robiskie who told her that they had a private workout with Roethlisberger and decided that he wouldn't be mobile enough with Cleveland's poor offensive line at the time.

"Which of course is shortsighted thinking, you cannot evaluate a quarterback for what your current offensive line looks like," said Cabot.

Cabot adds if it wasn't for the inexperience of Pete Garcia as the Browns General Manager, "they have taken and should have taken Ben Roethlisberger overall."

"They did not have much interest and when their pick came along, they went with Kellen Winslow who played for (then coach) Butch Davis at Miami . . . and they did not give much thought to drafting Ben," said Cabot.

Since then the Browns have looked to people like Jeff Garcia, Trent Dilfer, Brady Quinn, Colt McCoy and Johnny Manziel just to name a few to help carry them at quarterback.

The Browns have since seemingly found their guy in Baker Mayfield, but he has struggled this season and is dealing with offseason surgery with a shoulder injury.

It's safe to say the Browns made the wrong choice in 2004 and have been paying for it since.
Will Roethlisberger make them pay one more time on Monday night?
