PITTSBURGH (93.7 the Fan) Devin Bush, in the midst of an objectively not-so-great season, was given the Pittsburgh Steelers 2021 Ed Block Courage Award.
The award was given to Bush as a player for coming back from an ACL injury that took him out for a majority of the 2020 season.
Since Bush has recovered and returned to the field, he was voted by his fellow teammates as the perfect recipient for the Courage Award.
An injury like that is hard to come back from and that deserves at least a little respect, but it's the on field play that has followed his return that leaves a lot to be desired.
Head coach Mike Tomlin praised the linebacker for his dedication to football in the face of adversity.
"He is a football lover. And he can't hide it," said Tomlin. "It helps give him a winning edge in terms of facing the adversity that the game presents. He loves every component of the game. He likes practice. He likes walkthrough. He likes film sessions.
Again, though, Bush has been downright bad; Pro Football Focus has given him a defensive grade of 45.8.
For some comparison, teammate Joe Schobert has reached a grade of 63.2, and TJ Watt an overall grade of 89.8.
Tomlin continued his quote with: "I think that's the spirit in which he attacked his rehabilitation and that's why he's out there doing some of the things that he's doing."
What exactly is Bush doing, Coach Tomlin?
In all fairness to Bush, he's a player in the NFL. It's not an easy sport, and he plays a hard position.
Pittsburgh fans are also hard on the players, at times. Especially Steelers players.
Overall, Bush's recovery from a horrible knee injury deserves applause and the award he received.
But his play needs to turn around if the Steelers want any opportunity to win.
The Ed Block Courage Award is given to the Steelers player who best showed their courage and were able to come back from a massive injury or life-altering situation.
