PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – It's another veteran defensive back who can play multiple positions as Desmond King went through his first practice with the Steelers following his release by the Texans.
King said he was told by the Steelers they believe he can play inside (slot/nickel), outside (corner) or work at safety. It's a matter of him getting in a rhythm with the defense and his teammates to see where he fits. He said he's grown as a player because he knows what the responsibilities of all positions in the secondary.
"Everyone says I'm a natural nickel, I'm a football player," King said Monday. "You put me anywhere on the field, I'm going to make it happen."
The 28-year-old played in all 17 games (13 starts) with the Texans last year and in 16 games (12 starts) in 2021 combining for five interceptions over that time, 182 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 14 passes defended and a pair of fumble recoveries.
King says it's a dream come true to play for Mike Tomlin and the Steelers. He says the way he plays-physical, fast and smart fits the Steelers style. The Detroit native said he wants two things from a game-go get the ball and win. King says that is the culture in Pittsburgh and will be a good match.
"I know this here is a great tradition, great organization," the seven-year NFL veteran said. "A great leader as a head coach. Me going into this position is a good opportunity for me."
As for what he likes about Tomlin?
"Somebody that is going to keep it real," King said. "A coach that's going to tell you when you are right or wrong. Is going to uplift you while at the same time is going to tell you what you need to improve on. I know what kind of coach he is and what people have told me about him."
King did not have to clear waivers. He was clear to sign with anyone following his released by Houston and told us of his conversation with Tomlin before inking the deal on Thursday.
"It's the perfect fit for me," King said Tomlin told him. "He said you are the type of player that needs to be in this organization. You play fast. You tackle well and are physical. As long as you want to win, this is where you need to be."
King has played in Pittsburgh before. It was a Sunday night with the Chargers in 2018. Steelers up two touchdowns at half, King followed up an LA touchdown with a 73-yard punt return to tie the game and the Chargers would go on to win. He called it a big moment in his career. Now the Steelers are adding him as at least insurance with the possibility of it being more.
"God makes no mistakes, he put me in this position to be great," King said.
