Edmunds Brothers Ready to Collide in Historic Meeting

Pittsburgh Steelers running back Trey Edmunds (33) looks on against the Los Angeles Chargers at Dignity Health Sports Park.

Philadelphia is known as the 'City of Brotherly Love.' But, on Sunday night, that title could be applied to Pittsburgh. Specifically Heinz Field.

That is where the Steelers will meet the Buffalo Bills in a key matchup of teams currently in possession the two AFC wild card sports.

At the heart of the matchup will be a trio of brothers, Terrell and Trey Edmunds of the Steelers, and their brother, Bills linebacker Tremaine.

It is believed to be the first game in which three brothers will play in the same NFL game since 1927, when Joe, Cobb and Bill Rooney all played for the Duluth Eskimos.

"Going through little league, high school, college and now, just being able to actually see it happen now is huge," Said Trey Edmunds, in his third season as an NFL running back, and second in Pittsburgh.

"You think about it, you dream about it, but you don't really every know if it's actually going to happen. But now that we're a couple of days away from it, we're excited. Emotions are going to be everywhere, but it's going to be a good opportunity for our family and both teams."

All three brothers played for Virginia Tech, though Trey did transfer to Maryland for his senior season. All three were recruited as defensive players, with Trey switching to running back before his freshman season.

Terrell, meanwhile, ended up being the Steelers' first-round pick at the safety position in the 2018 NFL Draft. He was selected 12 picks after Tremaine, making them the first brothers to ever be taken in the first round.

"We talk every day," Terrell Edmunds said. "We don't talk about football all day, every day. But we definitely talked about the game and which family member is going to wear  which jersey. But really just talking about life."

Terrell brings up a good question that their parents have had to figure out. Their dad, Ferrell, was a two-time Pro Bowler at tight end, playing with the Dolphins and Seahawks. Now he and their mom, Felecia, will need to decide how and who they'll support come Sunday night.

"I'm going to let them do it, whatever they decide to come up with," Trey Edmunds said. "I'm sure they've been preparing this whole year, just like we have. I know they have a couple of tricks up their sleeves, as far as what they're going to wear and when they're going to cheer for which team. But it's going to be exciting. They're in a position where they can't lose, but we're in a position where we've got to win."

"Hopefully they choose the right one," Terrell Edmunds joked. "They're not trying to give us too much information, but hopefully they choose the right one."

Tremaine Edmunds has become a star in Buffalo, making a team-leading 97 tackles this season. While Terrell and Tremaine will likely never see the field at the same time, the possibility exists for Trey Edmunds, used some at the fullback position in the last couple of weeks, to run into Tremaine at some point, literally.

"Oh yeah, I'm definitely going to do that," Trey said. "That's my job. I'm sure he's going to try to run through me. That's his job. When that whistle blows, it's all competition at that point. It's love, but it's still competition. Everyone wants to win"
