PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – 'Of course' was the answer when Steelers quarterback Justin Fields was asked about his desire to be a part of the Steelers game plan on Saturday in Baltimore. The question is, will he?
Head coach Mike Tomlin said he's up for whatever combination brings them success between recent starter Russell Wilson and the starter for the first six games, Fields. The 25-year-old hasn't been in a game since he was hurt on an eight-yard run in Philadelphia. He says he's 100% back from abdomen injury which kept him out for a couple games.
Now it's a matter of if he's used-whether it's coming in on a short yardage, throwing a pass, being a decoy. He said after practice Tuesday he is ready for anything.
"Whichever way Arthur (Smith) wants to use me, if he does," Fields said. "We'll see."
Fields says he's preparing the same, always preparing like he's playing so if he would have his number called, he's ready. He did think it is an advantage for the Steelers just overall for the offense to have him available.
"I think me just being able to utilize, with his legs and stuff like that, causes the defense to have to watch film on that," Fields said. "Have to really just waste time on it whether we are running it or not. I think it's definitely a plus for us."
Fields was 4-2 as the starting quarterback, completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He's rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns at a 4.7 yards-per-attempt average in 2024.
The Ohio State All-American said the offense understands what their issues are. It's a matter of correcting them-from slow starts to third downs, they're working on answers and are enthusiastic starting the postseason.
"I don't think it's easy, but it's a new season now," Fields said. "Everybody is 0-0. You win and you stay in. You really have no choice but to reset."
Maybe he'll be a part of that, he was in the win over Baltimore in November.
