PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – First reported by the NFL Network, the Jets are signing 26-year-old quarterback Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract, $30 million guaranteed.
They report Fields informed the Steelers Monday afternoon he would not return, instead signing with New York. NFL Network said the Jets believe that Fields has much more upside than other options. Insider Ian Rapoport said Fields ‘is the guy the Jets wanted’ and they worked hard to recruit him.
Fields finished 4-2 to open the season as the starter before Russell Wilson took over to go 6-6. Fields completed 66% of his passes (career-high) for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He rushed for 289 yards and five touchdowns with six fumbles (three lost) and a career-low 4.7 yards per rush.
The 10th overall pick by the Bears in 2021 out of Ohio State, Fields turned 26 on March 5.
Taking over for Wilson after his injury on the first day of training camp, Fields had the respect of the locker room from his first day. He is known for a work ethic and ability to relate to players without making it about himself. Fields would put his head down and fight for tough yards.
Steelers could look to go back to Wilson or complete a deal with 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers.
