JuJu's brand building: praises Steelers fanbase size, throws James Harrison under the bus

In an interview with Bleacher Report's Adam Lefkoe, JuJu Smith-Schuster took a minute to answer questions on the brand-building process and the decisions behind it.

Specifically, Lefkoe asked Smith-Schuster about what works and what does not work in the decision-making.

In what could be seen as a double-edged example, Smith-Schuster both exalted the Steelers fans, at least the sheer size of the fanbase, but also name-dropped James Harrison to throw him under the bus.

Smith-Schuster also used the Baltimore Ravens as an example for what went into maintaining his brand.

As a free agent earlier this year, Smith-Schuster opted to re-up with the Steelers with a one-year contract, but he claimed in the interview that if he had gone to the Ravens, he would have lost many of his Pittsburgh fans.

And to a degree, that's probably true.

He would've had to start over essentially with a new city and a new group of fans.

But as Smith-Schuster talked about the importance of weighing the options, James Harrison was brought up.

"The most disrespectful thing is 'Hey, like, I'm James Harrison. Let me go to the Patriots,'" Smith-Schuster said.

"It kills your career. You lose that strong fanbase," Smith-Schuster continued.

What might not be fair to Harrison, though, is that Smith-Schuster was answering Lefkoe's questions based on this year's free agency, but Harrison was released in December 2017 by the Steelers.

He joined the Patriots a few days later on a one-year basis but retired in the offseason, just a few months later.

So Harrison's decision came out of necessity and being cut.

Smith-Schuster's choice presumably came after possessing more career flexibility as a free agent coming off his rookie contract than Harrison in 2017 when he was finishing his 16th year in the league and had been released in the final stretch of the season.
