PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) — The Steelers aren't in dire straits, but they are in cap hell.
Those gates are scheduled to open on March 17 — the start of the 2021 league season.
And as I hinted at, the Steelers are looking down the barrel of a serious salary cap problem, to the tune of about $35 million.
But it isn't hopeless.
In fact, "Around the NFL" editor Gregg Rosenthal sheds some light on the Steelers' situation and how they can turn last year's postseason dress rehearsal into something better next winter.
And tell me if you've heard this already, but Ben Roethlisberger is at the epicenter for Pittsburgh's turning the 2021 season into a 2022 Super Bowl.
In his article, which breaks down the best silver lining for all the AFC teams' championship endeavors, Rosenthal shoots it straight: make a decision on Roethlisberger.
The Steelers should "recognize that loyalty has its limits," in Rosenthal's words.
Rosenthal doesn't jump on the idea of just straight-up cutting loose Roethlisberger, though.
There's some flexibility.
And that leeway might come in the form of a pay cut, something that Roethlisberger recently stated he was willing to do.
There's a caveat, though.
Rosenthal suggests that if there are aspirations beyond 2021, then the Steelers should bite the bullet and part ways with Roethlisberger.
From Rosenthal's perspective, it seems like there would be one more year of Roethlisberger at the reins, at the most.
But keep your chin up; it's not all doom and gloom.
Rosenthal also extols the Steelers franchise for their ability to evaluate talent, the 2020 class being a swan song of Kevin Colbert's scouting and drafting capabilities.
Regardless, hitting in the draft is a useful skill to have when cycling in new talents.
Still, it appears that an emphasis on selecting a quarterback will become paramount sooner rather than later.
