Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin says he is the one that made the decision to fire offensive coordinator Matt Canada.
He opened his weekly news conference on Tuesday saying,
"I made a change at the coordinator position," said Tomlin. "Did not come to this decision lightly to be really transparent with you."
"From a leadership perspective, it is my role to absorbed and protect those that I work with and this doesn't feel like that," added Tomlin.
He said he isn't going to deflect or blame anyone for the Steelers offensive woes.
"I got a lot of respect for Matt personally and professionally, it was not easy, but I thought it was necessary.
Tomlin said there were several factors that led to Canada's dismissal but wouldn't get into specifics.
"It was mine and mine alone," reiterated Tomlin. That comes after Post-Gazette Steelers insider Gerry Dulac reported it was Art Rooney II that made the decision.
Tomlin did say that the results are not there and that they're still playing September football in late November.
"The improvements were not rapid enough or consistent enough for us to proceed, you got to score touchdowns in this business, you got to win games in this business and just the totality of it has us where we are today," said Tomlin.
