Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins’ former coach Ron Rivera is speaking out on what the Steelers are getting with him.
Haskins signed a Reserve/Future deal with the Steelers back in January
Talking on The Colin Cowherd podcast. Rivera says Haskins can be a great player but lacks focus.
"He's a very talented player,” said Rivera. “He's got an NFL arm, a legit arm. And there's a part of him that, that he wants to, he wants to, but something keeps getting in the way. I'm not sure what it was. And that was the hard part, because he puts in the time... and then he doesn't. And you wonder, 'where is he? What's he doing?' And then you see him over here and you go, 'okay.' And then you don't see him. So I think the thing he needs to do is just prioritize. I mean the kid, as I said: he's talented. And if he ever does get it, he's gonna make an impact."
Cowherd pointed out that numerous sources have told him that Haskins doesn’t “quite understand the commitment.”
"There's an intangible that you have to have, and as you said: if you're 20, and there's a group of 30-year-olds, you better be as mature as them."
Joining Mike Tomlin and the Steelers organization could be what exactly Haskins needs. Also, being an overall first round pick in the NFL Draft in 2019 and then being cut after not even two years could be the wakeup call that Haskins needs.
After being cut, Haskins was not picked up by anyone on waivers so this could be his last chance to make an NFL squad.
Haskins will also have to work to get better off the field.
He was reportedly seen at a strip club without wearing a mask and was fined $40,000 by Washington and stripped of his captain title before being benched and released.
In 13 games started over the past two seasons, Haskins has gone 3-10 with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions with a passer rating of 74.4.
While that isn’t encouraging, he was a breakout star at Ohio State in 2018 throwing 50 touchdowns completing 373 passes out of 533 attempts for 4,831 yards.
