Roman Wilson working every day to have impact in 2025
What the receiver said of DK Metcalf and his opportunity
PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – On the current roster, the door opened as much due to Steelers offseason moves for wide receiver Roman Wilson than nearly anyone. After an injury-filled first year, what the 2024 third-round pick said of the potential for more reps and impact in 2025.
"Of course, everyone likes to compete, but the only thing I'm focused on is getting better every single day to be ready when my name is called," Wilson said.
It's a refrain he would repeat a few times during a post-practice interview after Steelers voluntary workouts on the South Side. He admitted there is a sense of urgency this season and he's ready for whatever after sitting for most of his rookie season. This was after winning a national championship and averaging 16.4 yards a catch and 12 touchdowns his previous season at Michigan.
"Really my goals for the season are to get better every single day," Wilson said. "Treat every day like its game day, every practice like it's game day. Come prepared with questions to ask coaches after practice. Just be mentally, physically locked in every single day. Just give my all every single day so I can get better the next day and be ready for whenever my time is."
Wilson has had some time with new Steeler receiver DK Metcalf, as he was in Pittsburgh before the first OTA Tuesday, which Metcalf didn't attend. Wilson said he's watched Metcalf's reps and studied how he goes about his business.
Beyond Metcalf, Wilson is competing with 12-year veteran free agent signee Robert Woods, Calvin Austin, Ben Skowronek, Scotty Miller and a few others. Not only is it there for him, but the Steelers would need production out of him to improve the offense.
Steelers general manager Omar Khan even openly praised his work in the offseason.
"Roman's [Wilson] healthy," Khan said. "I've seen him the last couple of weeks out here and how he's doing, and we saw how he was progressing at the end of last year. Obviously, he didn't get the chance to get on the field, but there was some excitement there."
"That's a real blessing to have a guy like that say something for me," Wilson said. "At the end of the day, just got to keep working, keep getting better."
It's been a constant refrain of working and getting better, now he just has to do it. If he does, that third-round pick might pay off in 2025, even if a year after his pro career started.
"Whatever they want, I'm good for it," Wilson said. "Whatever they tell me to do."
