It looks like the Steelers are going to find a way to bring back Ben Roethlisberger for another season in 2021.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, owner Art Rooney II said that Ben has told the organization that he wants to come back, but knows it can’t be under the current contract the 38-year-old has.
Both sides will have to work toward a new agreement.
“We’ve been I think upfront with Ben and letting him know that we couldn’t have him back under the current contract and so I think he understand we have some work to do there so we’ll have more conversations internally and more conversations with Ben and obviously we’ll have to know what the cap number is at some point to really finalize some of those decisions,” said Rooney.
Rooney adds that while he hasn’t sat down with Roethlisberger, Coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Kevin Colbert have and that “we’ve left that door open.”
Under his current contract, Roethlisberger’s cap hit is a devastating $41 million, the highest in the league.
A restructuring and possible extension would need to happen to bring him back next season.
But with both Rooney saying he essentially wants Ben back and Roethlisberger saying he wants to play, the two sides working out a new deal or agreement is more likely than the Steelers trying to bring in another quarterback like Deshaun Watson or Matthew Stafford.
