PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers linebacker Devin Bush continues his return from knee surgery and participating as training camp continues at Heinz Field.
"He's in good shape," said Steelers linebackers coach Jerry Olsavsky. "He was out there for a couple of full-go plays (Wednesday) and it looked nice."
Bush injured during the game at Heinz Field against the Browns on October 18 last year. He was having one of his better games with a quarterback hit and five tackles before he left, tearing his ACL along the sideline.
Now the 2019 first round pick is working his way back into his starting middle linebacker position. A former NFL linebacker himself, Olsavsky said this is the hardest time of the process.
"He's healthy," Olsavsky said. "This is the mental part of the rehab, where you have to be on the field and do things again. That's a lot harder than the physical stuff."
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said they plan to limit snaps at times for Bush during training camp, which he said also allows opportunities for the backups to get reps. They expect Bush to be ready for the regular season.
He's key to that defense, especially in coverage situations where Olsavsky confirmed they want Bush in the middle in passing defenses where Robert Spillane fills in now.
"Devin is used to working his tail off to be a great player," Olsavsky said. "The mental is now what has to come."
"It's hard."
