PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Steelers really thought they had a sleeper when they drafted running back/returner Anthony McFarland, Junior in the fourth round in 2020. Thursday, they released him.
The 5'8", 193-pound tailback battled injury and lack of practice time due to COVID his first couple of seasons. Even this year McFarland came off an impressive training camp and missed a month due to a knee injury. The Maryland product played in only three games this season without a rush and two receptions for 11 yards. He returned six kicks for 164 yards, an impressive 27.3 average but was replaced by Godwin Igwebuike for the last month.
McFarland had a 298-yard game against Ohio State in 2018, when he played for former Steelers offensive coordinator Matt Canada. Overall in his NFL career, 146 yards on 42 carries with 11 receptions for 87 yards, never scoring a TD with the Steelers.
There is a chance he could re-sign on the practice squad. McFarland will become a free agent after this season.
