Tomlin: Russell Wilson will be the backup against Raiders
Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has officially named Justin Fields the starting quarterback for Sunday afternoon's game against Las Vegas.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Tomlin said that Russell Wilson will be the team's backup quarterback against the Raiders.
"He's probably going to be active as a number two quarterback," said Tomlin. "Like what I've seen out here but again, health and rust are two different things. I thought he had a good week displaying his health, his ability to protect himself. Now it's just a process of getting reacclimated to the ball."
Wilson was the emergency quarterback the first five games of the season.
Wilson, who has been dealing with a calf injury, practiced in full this week. The first time he's done that so far this season.
This could be the last chance Fields gets to prove himself as the definitive starting quarterback for the Steelers.
While he's been better than he was in Chicago and is improving, the Steelers offensive is pretty similar to last year's under Pickett, Trubisky and Rudolph.
After two straight losses, it has become easier to argue removing Fields for the veteran Wilson, but this Sunday's game could make or break Fields' playing time moving forward this season.
"I hope that Justin isn't thinking 'I've got to be spectacular to keep my job'," said Joe Starkey Friday. "I hope this isn't the week he tries to do way too much."
Donny Football says it looked like Fields was "pressing" against the Cowboys on Sunday night and play "hero ball" something he did too often in Chicago.
Depending on how Sunday plays out for the Steelers, next week could be very interesting for the team's quarterback room.
