The last time Mitch Trubisky relieved Kenny Pickett, he threw for two touchdown passes in an impressive win over the Buccaneers.
The Steelers' backup wasn't nearly as good Sunday in Pittsburgh's 16-14 loss to the Ravens, and CBS analyst Trent Green identified exactly what went wrong with one particularly egregious interception. Trubisky threw three picks overall.
Late in the second quarter, Trubisky tossed his second interception in as many tries attempting to find Pat Freiermuth over the middle of the field. On the first throw, Trubisky failed to see Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith, and repeated the same mistake on the following possession when he overlooked Patrick Queen. Both linebackers jumped the route.
Green called out Trubisky for his poor field vision.
"Trubisky thinks he has him, but he doesn't pay attention to the backside linebacker, Queen," said Green. "Watch [Trubisky's] eyes. His eyes are looking to the right the whole time, Queen is seeing his eyes are looking that way. He gets over, makes an incredible catch—leaping interception."
Trubisky's back-to-back interceptions are exactly why he's a backup. Both passes were destined to fail, considering the Ravens had four defenders in the middle of the field — exactly where Trubisky threw the ball.
Trubisky's throws were so bad, even Green, who usually just spouts obvious cliches, was able to provide actual analysis. Though Trubisky finished 22-of-30 for 276 yards, he was too careless with the ball.
As Green said, he telegraphed his throws into tight coverage areas. That's a bad combination.
