PITTSBURGH (93.7 The Fan) – Starting corner Cam Sutton's contract was voided on Friday. What does that mean?
Sutton was likely to become a free agent anyway, but by missing the Friday deadline, the Steelers now have a $2.1 million dead cap hit on Sutton. Even if he signs elsewhere, the Steelers will still owe that money.
It's the money moved from his last contract which was two-years, $9.5 million to create some cap space.
The soon-to-be 28-year-old corner has made $12.2 million over his six-year Steelers career and this is likely his best chance for a big contract with experts projecting he could make anywhere from six to nine million dollars a year on a potential three-year deal. Pro Football Focus ranks Sutton as the 23rd best overall free agent and third best cornerback.
A starter at Tennessee, Sutton has started 39 of his 84 games in the NFL, including all but one over the last two seasons. His first year as a starting corner, Sutton had a career-high three interceptions in 2022, eight in his career. He also had a career-high with 15 passes defended, now 38 in six seasons. Sutton has five career forced fumbles and 168 tackles (143 solo), eight tackles for loss.
Steelers are expected to dump corners William Jackson and Ahkello Witherspoon, which while leaving a void, frees up cap room for Sutton.
"This is home," Sutton said in January confirmed he would want to stay in Pittsburgh. "It's been home to me since the beginning, a strong foundation. A lot of love for all the aspects here, including the City. We'll see come soon."
