A man who allegedly assaulted family members in the past stabbed his father to death Wednesday morning in the Lake Balboa area of the San Fernando Valley and was then shot and killed by police, authorities said.

Officers were called at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to the 17200 block of Valerio Street, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Officers sent to a home at the address were informed that a man who had attacked family members in the past was involved in domestic dispute, an LAPD spokesman told reporters at the scene.

Arriving officers heard sounds of a struggle and forced their way into the house, where the suspect was fighting with his father. At least one officer opened fire and the younger man was struck.

Both father and son were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman said crews responded after being summoned at about 8:10 a.m. by police who reported a shooting. The LAFD did not transport anyone to a hospital, according to department spokeswoman Lyndsey Lantz.

She confirmed that two men, one believed to be 62 years old and the other 40, were pronounced dead at the scene, but the fire department did not have information about how they were killed.

A pair of scissors was recovered by police, but it was not immediately clear if they had been used during the attack.
