The fire was reported at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday at 2624 S. Maple Ave., in the Historic South Central Los Angeles area, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Video from the scene showed flames engulfing a second-floor apartment in the two-story structure and firefighters using a ladder to rescue people from a balcony.
Four people were assessed at the scene and two of them were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, an LAFD spokeswoman said.
Sixty-one firefighters responded and had the blaze out by 12:07 a.m. Thursday.
Building inspectors red-tagged the structure, meaning it was unfit for habitation.
The American Red Cross was called in to assist an undisclosed number of displaced residents.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
