A 17-year-old boy succumbed to gunshot wounds Thursday morning at an Orange County hospital. Police said he was shot over the weekend by a friend who allegedly lied to investigators that the victim was struck in a drive-by shooting.
The victim was shot Sunday evening at a home at the 1700 block of North Holbrook Street in Anaheim, police Sgt. Shane Carringer told The Orange County Register.
When Anaheim police were called to the scene, the suspect said the pair had been shot at by unknown assailants from inside a passing vehicle. Detectives later discovered no such shooting occurred and began to suspect the friend, Zachary Pickrell, 18, also of Anaheim.
Pickrell was arrested and booked into county jail on suspicion of attempted murder late on Sunday evening.
The victim was rushed to an area hospital for treatment. He died Thursday morning, authorities said. His name has not been released at this time.
Anaheim police are continuing to investigate the incident. "There are still outstanding witnesses who knew these two kids that they want to speak to," Carringer told The Register. But they are expected to file the case as a murder.
