Generative artificial intelligence may be able to help Caltrans improve safety for drivers and help with bad traffic.
Caltrans launched a pilot program using this technology to find some of the worst traffic points in the state. KNX News’ Chief Correspondent Charles Feldman spoke to David Man, division chief of traffic operations for Caltrans, about the pilot program.
“Generative AI, in our opinion, has the potential to help us better understand the system and help us deliver strategies and projects and initiatives that could be more focused in helping us to really improve safety for all roadway users,” Man said.
He explained how the technology has the potential to alert Caltrans when traffic signals aren’t performing as optimally as possible. After being notified of a problem, a Caltrans team member can fix the signal or adjust it so the timing works better with the flow of traffic.
“Safety is at the top of our list and, you know, improperly or less-than-efficient operations, signals do cause safety concerns,” Man said.
Although some artificial intelligence has already been implemented across the state, it’s still relatively new. Man noted that over the next six months, Caltrans will begin to have more of a clear picture of the abilities of generative AI and its limitations.

“We want to make sure that this technology is applied safely and responsibly,” he said.
Caltrans won’t solely rely on generative AI for data on safety and traffic across the state. Man said they’re focusing on validated data sets to minimize any potential for insights built off of false assumptions.
