A large crack was found Thursday on a busy freeway in Hollywood after a car was struck by a chunk of concrete, injuring its driver and prompting emergency repairs that snarled traffic.

The crack was found around 7:40 a.m. Thursday by crews that responded to a crash of a car into debris on the northbound Hollywood (101) Freeway just north of Western Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A woman in her late 40s reported that a baseball-sized chunk of concrete came through a side window and lacerated her left ear.

The wound was four inches long, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department, which took the woman to a hospital in fair condition.

Two northbound lanes were closed to allow Caltrans to make emergency repairs and a SigAlert was issued as northbound traffic began backing up toward downtown Los Angeles. Southbound traffic was also slow through the area.

The CHP later extended the SigAlert for several more hours.

All lanes were reopened about 1:20 p.m.

It was not immediately clear if the concrete chunk came from the crack, or if the crack was a result of the wreck. It was identified by first responders as they arrived on scene.
