What do L.A. police do if they have to pull over a Waymo?

It was a first for police in San Bruno when officers stopped a Waymo that made an illegal U-turn over the weekend.

“That’s right… no driver, no hands, no clue,” a post on the department’s Facebook page read.

Police said that the officers contacted the company and informed them of the “glitch,” but they couldn’t issue a ticket because there wasn’t a human driver.

What if this happens in Los Angeles? Do officers have a protocol in place? Captain Mike Bland with the Los Angeles Police Department told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou they’re prepared.

“We do have a partnership with Waymo that, if there is an incident in regards to one of their vehicles, where there's a technological malfunction or whatever issue, we have a Waymo dispatch center we can call,” he said. “We have an email as well.”

Bland added that they haven’t had a case yet where Waymo violated traffic laws
