A Thailand temple full of Buddhist monks was found guilty of reaching for enlightenment through synthetically-enhanced methods. Now the monastery sits empty.

The entire cadre of monks living at a temple in the Bung Sam Phan district tested positive for methamphetamines.

As a result, they were all defrocked and sent immediately to rehab.

“The temple is now empty of monks and nearby villagers are concerned they cannot do any merit-making,” local authorities said.

“Merit-making” involves worshippers doing good deeds, including donating food to nearby monks.

Meth addiction has become rampant in Thailand thanks to its relative affordability. Meth pills can be bought for about 50 cents apiece.
