A group that helps people avoid and fight identity theft says we need to improve how we verify our identities. Biometrics could be the answer.

"We have seen over time, this tremendous rise in impersonations," points out James E. Lee, Chief Operating Officer with the Identity Theft Resource Center. Lee tells KMOX, so much of our personal data has been compromised, that biological measurements of our faces, may now be a more reliable way to verify our identities. "You already have a biometric, most adults. You're walking around with it in your pocket right now. It's your driver's license."

Lee says the hurdle is getting people to understand the difference between this type of facial verification, versus facial recognition used in surveillance. "That is the one thing that most people can identify with, you open up your phone with your face and that's a form a facial verification."

In a new discussion paper, the ITRC points out, most adults already have a photo on file with government agencies thanks to ID's and passports.  But that could also create barriers to facial verification for populations without easy access to technology.
