Our Lady of Victory Church had more than 600 people in its parking lot to pick up air purifiers, masks, and other supplies to support them in their smoke-impacted homes.
Local officials from Supervisor Hilda Solis's office told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou that they are working to support people living closest to the warehouse fire in Boyle Heights.
“The county, because East L.A. is an unincorporated community governed by the county and Supervisor Solis is their representative, we're making sure that any allocation of air purifiers and resources is going directly to unincorporated East LA residents,” Kimberly Ortega of Solis's office said.
The event brought out many of these residents, as long lines formed to get the free supplies.
“My mom got a purifier because of the smoke that's entering our homes, like we can't even breathe,” said Petonia Marin. “So they were giving a purifier, so we came and got one.”
Via Care Community Health Center had a mobile medical station that aimed to assess seniors and children with breathing issues.
The station assessed between 60 and 100 patients, giving advice on how to cope with the discomfort the Boyle Heights fire has brought.
