Herrera was found dead on the Interstate 10 on-ramp on Mar. 30, 1993, officials said.

Thomas, a retired cross-country truck driver, was arrested in late May after DNA linked him to a 1992 murder in Titus County, Texas.

“Thomas’s DNA was also connected to evidence gathered during the investigation into Sherri Herrera’s murder,” the District Attorney’s Office said. “Investigators with the Riverside County Regional Cold Case Team, which is led by the DA’s Bureau of Investigation, traveled to Texas and interviewed Thomas about Sherri Herrera’s murder.”

Thomas will be prosecuted in Texas for the 1992 murder. Afterward, the District Attorney’s Office will request he be extradited to California.
