The Metro D-line subway extension opened on Friday, more than ten years after the project broke ground.
The line allows passengers to keep rolling along and under Wilshire Boulevard through the Miracle Mile area.
Patrick Chandler, a spokesperson for Metro, said the new subway line is a game-changer.
“It’s a huge day for Metro, but really it's a huge day for Los Angeles, Los Angeles County,” he said. “It's a huge day for Museum Row in this part of Los Angeles. We're bringing transit back to Los Angeles. We have a number of events coming up, like the World Cup. We also have the Olympics coming up, as well.”
Mayor Karen Bass, her predecessors, and more than 100 dignitaries celebrated the opening by taking the train to the brand new Fairfax Station for the grand opening.
Eric Garcetti was in office when the project broke ground in 2014. He said he couldn’t be happier to see the project finally be done.
“You know, this was blood, sweat, and tears, opposition, dreams, dreams crushed, nightmares, and finally today is the realization of what we all aspire to do - get the hell out of traffic and move through this town quickly,” he told Baird.
KNX News producer Donald Morrison, who takes the MetroLink and D-Line to get to KNX’s Miracle Mile newsroom, is among the excited passengers.
“I knew they'd get it done someday,” he said.
Metro officials hope to open the other two D-line extensions sometime in 2027, which would allow people to travel from downtown L.A. to Westwood in about 35 minutes.Follow KNX News 1070 AM
