Welcome to 94WIP's G.O.A.T. of Broad Street, where we will finally determine who the greatest athlete in Philadelphia sports history is. Remember, in order to qualify, the athlete must have played in Philadelphia in the last 50 years (1970). Please cast your vote here to help us decide!
1) Jason Kelce: There’s no argument that Jason Kelce is the best center in football— he’s been the 1st-Team All-Pro center three years in a row. He runs the Eagles offense on the field, nails every call, constantly communicates, sees all, and he’s the finest athlete to ever play the position.
Achieved legendary status at the Super Bowl parade, when he extemporaneously encapsulated the Eagles’ greatest season of all time with emotional perfection. Think about everything he put into that— the Mummer’s costume, the message, the love. Epic as a player and person. We don’t appreciate him enough.
2) Mike Schmidt: Mike Schmidt is unquestionably the greatest third baseman of all time. As close to offensive and defensive perfection as the sport permits.
3) Julius Erving: It felt like Julius Erving modernized basketball while leading the Sixers to four NBA Finals and the ‘83 NBA Championship.
4) Joe Frazier: Olympic gold medal and four years as undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World.
5) Reggie White: Averaged 15.5 sacks per year over his eight seasons as an Eagle. His nine straight years with double-digit sacks are still an NFL record. Absolute physical dominance.
