Penn State is no longer in the top five for shortest odds to win the College Football Playoff National Championship — as they were before the Ohio State game — but the Nittany Lions aren’t far behind with two weeks remaining in the regular season.
Entering the Week 10 game against the Buckeyes, Penn State had BetMGM’s fifth-shortest odds to win the title:
Georgia: +425
Ohio State: +425
Oregon: +450
Texas: +550
Penn State: +1400
The Nittany Lions dropped to +2200 (eighth) after the 20-13 loss and have spent the last two-and-a-half weeks climbing back. As of Tuesday at the online sportsbook, they’re +1800, tied with Notre Dame for sixth:
Ohio State: +320
Oregon: +450
Georgia: +500
Texas: +500
Alabama: +750
Ole Miss: +1100
Penn State: +1800
Notre Dame: +1800
Bettors have remained lukewarm on Penn State winning their first national championship since 1986. They’ve floated around 2-3% of the tickets and 1-2% of the handle for most the season, currently sitting at 2.9% of the handle and 1.7% of the tickets. Ohio State leads in both with 13.7% of the tickets and 16.5% of the handle.
