Moderna has announced their experimental vaccine is 94.5% effective in preventing COVID-19 based on interim data from a late-stage clinical trial.
Dr. Ken Remy, a local critical care physician-scientist, joins the show to discuss the news on numbers ahead of the holiday season.
Dr. Remy says they’ve never implemented such a large-scale vaccination effort but he’s cautiously optimistic that a first round of vaccines at the beginning of 2021 will help flatten the curve by March or April.
A couple of weeks ago, Dr. Remy told Marc that the hospitalization numbers were inaccurate, as the reports were not accounting for non-COVID-related admissions.
Unfortunately, things have changed. Due to a number of reasons, local area hospitals are reaching capacity with positive COVID-19 patients.
“I wish we weren’t in the situation, but we are and we can’t change that right now unless we alter behavior,” says Dr. Remy.
Dr. Remy sites improper masks wearing and mask fatigue among reasons for the spike.
