Former President Donald J. Trump may be facing an impeachment hearing next week, but in the Florida city of Frostproof, he’s being honored with his own week.
Frostproof officials declared February 1 through February 6 “Donald Trump Week.”
Fox News reports that State Rep. Anthony Sabatini, who proposed renaming U.S. Route 27 as "President Donald J. Trump Highway," spoke in support of the week honoring Trump, and called it "a great initiative."
But not everyone is celebrating. The Black community of Frostproof are upset over the decision, particularly because it’s in February, the month when Black History is celebrated.
“It sends a message that Black History Month isn’t important,” Merissa Green told The Tampa Bay Times.
“The problem is not about the fact they want to have a proclamation for Donald J. Trump, the problem is the action was taken during Black History Month,” Green said.
President of the Republican Club, James Ring, who was present at the City Council meeting Monday night during the announcement of Trump week tells Tampa Bay times that he doesn’t think the city’s recognition of Trump conflicts at all with the celebration of Black History Month.
“I don’t think it’s fair it’s turned into a race issue,” he said. “I don’t think there was any ill intent on behalf of the City Council.”
