As worry about the president running for a second term continues to mount, many have begun looking at possible replacements for Biden that could take on former President Trump. One matchup features the current VP and Trump’s old rival.
In a new poll from Bendixen & Amandi, published exclusively by Politico, an entire range of candidates and potential tickets were examined to see how they would match up against the presumptive Republican nominee.
The poll found that if Vice President Kamala Harris were the nominee, she would lead Trump by a narrow margin in a 42% to 41% hypothetical matchup.
Also examined was 2016 Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who was found to also hold a lead over Trump, beating him 43% to 41%.
Trump won in matchups against California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who trailed by three points, and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who trailed by four points, according to the survey.
But, the ticket that proved the best against Trump in the poll was one that featured Clinton and Harris, coming at 43% to Trump’s 40%. That ticket even outperformed the Biden-Harris option by four-points.
“I’m really surprised by Hillary’s strength. While some dismiss her as yesterday’s news and a candidate of the past, voters at least in this poll suggest they may be open to a Clinton comeback and that a ticket with Clinton as president and Harris as vice president is even ‘stronger together,’” Fernand Amandi, one of the pollsters, shared with Politico.
However, even with the poll showing a Clinton-Harris team up potentially beating Trump the prospect of it panning out doesn’t seem likely.
The former Secretary of State has made it clear that she no longer plans on running for president.
The chance that Biden is replaced also remains nothing more than rhetoric, as the president maintains that he doesn’t intend on leaving the race anytime soon, despite recent criticism.
