As the gun rights debate rages across the country in the wake of continued instances of mass shootings, some Louisiana legislators are looking to loosen up the state’s own gun regulations, and they’ve seemingly enlisted the aid of a rock legend whose never been shy about his own firearms enthusiasm.
Ted Nugent is participating in a campaign to support Louisiana lawmakers’ push to allow concealed carry without a permit.
“Ted Nugent here with Hunter Nation!” begins a text message sent out to Louisiana residents. “A special legislative session starts today and Governor Landry and Senator Blake Miguez need your help to make LA a Constitutional Carry state!”
The text contains contact info for Sen. Bob Hensgens and Rep.
Chance Henry and ends:
“CAN I COUNT YOU IN TO HELP PASS CONSTITUTIONAL CARRY?”
According to the United States Concealed Carry Association, “constitutional carry” is defined as:
“The state’s law does not prohibit citizens who can legally possess a firearm from carrying handguns, (openly and/or in a concealed manner) thus no state permit is required. Sometimes, constitutional carry may be conditional such as in those states that have no laws prohibiting the open carry of a handgun but which require a permit to carry the handgun concealed.”
Currently, two bills are seeking to eliminate the requirement for permits for handguns in Louisiana: Senate Bill 1 and House Bill 12.
Both bills have certain common requirements, including that the gun owner be 18 or older, legally allowed to own a firearm by both state and federal law, and that the gun can only be carried in places where it is legal for civilians to carry.
Former Gov. John Bel Edwards previously vetoed two separate attempts to pass constitutional carry bills in the state. Current Gov. Jeff Landry said he would support such bills.
