Now that the 2024 presidential election is not even a year away and former President Donald Trump has maintained a steady lead as the GOP frontrunner, people are starting to wonder who his running mate will be.
This week during an interview with “Clay & Buck”, he hinted at a possible contender who may come as a bit of a surprise: former FOX news host Tucker Carlson.
“I like Tucker a lot; I guess I would,” Trump said. “I think I’d say I would, because he’s got great common sense.”
Things have come a long way since text messages from Carlson were revealed as part of the Dominion Voting Systems lawsuit. According to The Hill, Carlson wrote “I hate him passionately,” of Trump in one message, according to The Hill. He also slammed unfounded voter fraud claims that Trump has continued to make since the 2020 election.
Then, in April, Carlson was let go from FOX News after being with the company since 2009. In June, Trump announced his own issues with the right-wing news station, declaring “MAGA has left FOX.”
When Trump decided to skip the first GOP presidential candidate debate in August, he joined Carlson for an interview on his new show available on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Since then, Trump has touted how many views the video got. During his “Clay & Buck” interview, he told hosts Clay Travis and Buck Sexton that he and Carlson “broke every record in history.”
Carlson regularly posts new episodes on X.
In addition to the pundit, Trump also told Travis and Sexton that he is considering a vice president from the pool of other GOP contenders for the 2024 candidate nomination.
“It’s possible. Look, some of them are, ah, running – I happen to have a couple of them that are very friendly,” he said, adding that some called him the “best president,” including Vivek Ramaswamy.
Trump has said in the past that Ramaswamy would be a good VP pick. He’s ruled out last running mate, former Vice President Mike Pence, long ago.
“I don’t think the people would accept it,” Trump told the Washington Examiner during an interview from Mar-a-Lago last year.
Although Trump faces considerable legal challenges – including some that could potentially land him in jail or prevent him from appearing on the ballot next November – he was far in the lead of the GOP pack as of Friday, per FiveThirtyEight. Poll results released this week also showed promising results for Trump against current President Joe Biden in key battleground states.
