If you have hopes of one day having the famous blue check mark next to your name on Twitter, don't expect it to be free, as a report has found the company is considering making verified users pay a monthly subscription fee.
Internal Twitter documents viewed by CNN showed that Twitter officials are considering adding a $ 19.99-a-month fee for verified accounts. Those who don't wish to pay the money could be at risk of losing their check mark.
The plan and pricing could change now that Elon Musk has taken over the company. However, the details of the possible subscription service are unclear as some question whether certain verified users would be exempt from paying like international organizations and charities.
The changes, if implemented, would be an update to the existing "Twitter Blue" subscription that costs $4.99 a month and is available in four countries. The update would also add the verification feature at the new price point.
The new owner of Twitter, Musk, has already gotten to work making changes at the company. He shared on Sunday that the site's processes for verifying users were going to be "revamped."
A poll tweeted by Jason Calacanis asked what users would be willing to pay to be verified on Twitter, to which the majority said they "wouldn't pay." Musk said in a response tweet that was "interesting."
Other changes expected from Musk include firings, like the several he has already made, and the possibility of bringing back the site Vine, a favorite social media platform that was bought and then closed by Twitter.
But while Musk continues to flirt with several changes to Twitter, including shaking up character limits, it is not known what exactly he will do with the company.
