Padres use long ball to beat Cards 6-4!

The San Diego Padres defeated the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday afternoon after using home runs by Austin Hedges and Manny Machado to finish the comeback in the 8th inning.

The Padres were able to get the scoring started early in the first inning with a Hunter Renfroe double to left field that scored Eric Hosmer to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Unfortunatley with bases loaded and only 1 out they were unsuccessful in adding additional runs.

In the second inning the Cardinals were able to tie the game on a Kolten Wong sacrifice fly that scored Yadier Molina against Padres starter Chris Paddack. Paddack, who was making his second Major League start in his career, was not as dominate as he was in his first start. Paddack pitched 3 2/3 innings allowing one run on one hit, striking out four but allowed four walks. Looking at the stat line, Paddack pitched great, but with all the walks and the high pitch counts, he struggled to find the zone.

The Cardinals would take a 3-1 lead in the 5th innning on a home run off the bat of Marcell Ozuna on a 3-2 pitch from Robert Stock. We have seen this before right? Padres trailing by more than one run late in a game and it ends in a Padres loss right? WRONG.

This years Padres team has proven that it they can put up runs and do it late. After Eric Hosmer hit a solo shot in the 7th inning to cut the deficit to one run, the Padres took the lead in their half of the 8th inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. walked to lead off the inning, Austin Hedges would follow and on a 3-2 pitch deposited the ball 393 feet to left field for a 2-run home run and a Padres 4-3 lead.
