Jacoby Jones hit a three-run home run to cap a four-run, fifth-inning rally leading the Detroit Tigers past the San Diego Padres, 8-4, in the rubber game of the teams’ three-game weekend series at Comerica Park.
Chris Paddack (1-3) suffered the loss, unable to hold early leads of 2-0 and then 4-2. With two on and two in the fifth, Andrew Romine singled in a run, setting the stage for Jones’ blast which put Detroit ahead to stay, 6-4.
Spencer Turnbull pitched eight strong innings to get the win for the Tigers. He allowed only three earned runs, all on solo home runs by Manny Machado, Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers. For Hosmer, the Padres’ first baseman, it was his first homer of the year. It was just the second for Machado.
Meanwhile, Romine drove in three runs in all leading a 13-hit Tigers attack, which included at least one hit from each of the nine starters. Shortstop Nico Goodrum drove in a pair, finishing with six hits and five RBIs in the series. The Tigers finished with 44 hits in the three-game set.
